Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital Retains Pie on New Hospital Construction Project

Arvada, Colorado (January 15, 2013) – Pie Consulting & Engineering (Pie) was awarded the construction phase Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) services contract for the all-new Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital, located in downtown Denver.

Slated for completion in 2014, the $623 million, 830,000 square-foot hospital to replace the current facility, will operate as a full-service hospital built with 348 private patient rooms. The seven-floor facility will feature: a roof-top helipad, space dedicated to medical imaging, a library, and spiritual care, a centerpiece chapel structure, central courtyard, and balconies at every level. The project also includes two new parking garages and a free standing Central Utility Plant that will serve the building and other campuses.  M.A. Mortenson is the general contractor on the project and the project architects include Colorado based Davis Partnership, H+L Architects, as well as Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects from Portland, OR.

Pie will lend its BECx expertise in performing the following:

  • Shop drawing & submittal reviews
  • Sub-contractor pre-installation meetings participation
  • Site mock-up testing
  • Off-site curtain wall and opaque wall shop fabrication quality assurance observations and reporting
  • On-site quality assurance observations and reporting
  • LEED consultant interfacing

“Both the project design and construction process on the new hospital are implementing some industry leading and advanced building enclosure system approaches.  Pie is excited to be working for Exempla Saint Joseph and as a part of the project delivery team on making this signature Denver healthcare project a reality.” – Eric Amhaus, Pie Principal.

The replacement hospital is part of The Heritage Project, a multi-year construction project concluding with the opening of the new Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver. Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital was founded in Denver in 1873 by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Kansas as the first, private hospital in Colorado. Today, it continues as the largest private, teaching hospital in Denver.  The hospital provides a tradition of health care that includes compassionate caregivers, stellar clinical expertise and an active partnership with both physicians from the Colorado Permanente Medical Group as well as community physicians
