Pie Collaborates on Pearl Harbor Naval Base Project

Arvada, Colorado (June 1, 2012) – Pie Consulting & Engineering (Pie) recently provided its building enclosure air barrier testing expertise on a Child Development Center (CDC) at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. The project is an RMA Land Construction and ECC Joint Venture with Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) project classification.  Scheduled for June 2012 completion, the project will achieve LEED GOLD certification for sustainability. The $15.9 million project consists of a new single-story, 37,404 square-foot CDC featuring 24 customized child activity rooms, a commercial kitchen, administrative spaces, and outdoor courtyard play areas.

The RMA Land project management team retained Pie for its specialized technical expertise in performing air barrier testing and diagnostics after the project’s initial air barrier consulting/testing firm, was unsuccessful in testing the building as a single zone and determining air leakage pathways.

Pie was able to quickly determine that the whole building air leakage rate was slightly above the specified requirement. After diagnosing and targeting the exact areas of air leakage, Pie consulted with RMA Land for the implementation of immediate corrective actions which ultimately delivered a successful ‘passing’ test to the project team. Air barrier testing and infrared / fog generation diagnostics were conducted in accordance with ASTM E779, E1827, and E1186.

“It was very gratifying to effectively complete this project, especially knowing that a previous consultant was unable to successfully accomplish the testing.  After reviewing the architectural drawings and briefly surveying the job-site, I knew that the approach the previous consultant had taken was not appropriate for this building.  Rather than compartmentalizing the building as was previously attempted, we tested the building as a whole or single zone, which simplified the test and resulted in accurate and repeatable test data,” – Stuart Mitchell, P.E., Pie Project Manager.

Pie’s Building Science Group provides building enclosure commissioning (BECx) and exterior building envelope consulting services including: design development guidance, technical design review and analysis, shop drawing and submittal reviews, quality assurance observations, customized training programs, and specialized building performance testing and diagnostic services (whole building air barrier, water, thermal, wind uplift, etc.) for both the new and retrofit design and construction industries.
