Pie Collaboration on New & Existing Iconic Building Designs

It’s a well-known fact that thoughtful design achieves a balance between form and function. The same rule holds true when addressing sophisticated and iconic architecture. The complex aesthetic that describes some of today’s iconic designs must be balanced by a quality assurance program that will ensure the proper function of its exterior envelope. A more complex, dynamic design exponentially increases constructability concerns, long-term performance, and post-occupancy risks. From a performance perspective, it is a published fact that more than 70% of all construction related claims, defects, and warranty call-backs are attributed to the building envelope. That’s where Pie Consulting & Engineering comes in.

Pie has been involved with many projects designed by some of the most recognized architects including Gio Ponti and Salvatore Calatrava. In addition, our team is currently collaborating with noted architects across the country on several iconic designs. One such project in Colorado involves a well-known and much-anticipated home for one of the most renowned sporting events in history, the Olympics.

U.S. Olympic Museum and Hall of Fame
Colorado Springs, Colorado is home to the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Soon it will also be home to the U.S. Olympic Museum and Hall of Fame. While Lake Placid has a small facility that honors the two Winter Games hosted in New York, this project will produce the first full-fledged Olympic museum in the country.

“This is a very interesting project, with unique diamond-shaped panels that comprise the complex curtain walls, metal panel assemblies, and roof system,” said Stuart Mitchell, a senior project manager at Pie. “While the viewer sees a seamless, curving transition between each area, behind the scenes there are, of course, distinct wall and roof assemblies. The complex geometry has made this a fun challenge for our team, as we address the air, water, vapor, and thermal control aspects of the structure.”
