Building Enclosure Consulting & Performance Testing

Today’s building enclosure systems are more complex in design than ever before. The continuing innovation in product manufacturing fuels design creativity and expands the limits of building enclosure applications. This innovation brings a heightened demand for building enclosure consulting and field testing to ensure that the building envelope performs to a high standard.

Statistically, more than 70% of all construction related claims, defects, and warranty call-backs are attributed to improper building enclosure design and/or installation (per ASHRAE and ASTM studies). As a result, owners are frequently utilizing building enclosure commissioning (BECx) to measure and verify that installed systems meet the owner’s project requirements. However, even though envelope systems are not commissioned on every project, the need for comprehensive quality assurance during design and construction remains. In response, building enclosure consulting offers a variety of performance-based services including:

  • Design Charrette Meetings
  • Technical Plan and Specification Reviews
  • Advanced Thermal Modeling and Hygrothermal Analysis
  • Subcontractor Submittal and Shop Drawing Reviews
  • Mock-Up Quality Assurance and Performance Testing
  • Quality Assurance Observations
  • Field Performance Testing

  • Assists with material selection, detailing, and compatibility
  • Addresses elevated design and construction complexity
  • Reduces risk of water penetration, condensation development, and air leakage
  • Increases energy efficiency
  • Improves occupant comfort

Applicable Field Performance Testing:

  • ASTM E 1105 & E 783 water & air performance (including AAMA 502 and 503)
  • AAMA 501.2 water spray
  • ASTM D 4541 adhesion
  • ASTM E 779 & E 1827 whole building air tightness
  • ASTM E 1186 & ASTM C 1060 air leakage & infrared diagnostics
  • ASTM C 1153 infrared diagnostics for wet insulation
  • FM 1-52 wind uplift resistance

“Pie’s support has made our project outcomes more successful and predictable. It is always a pleasure to work with your team and the peace of mind it brings knowing that things will be done correctly. The relationships that are built in this business last well beyond the projects, and this is a relationship that I truly value.”
