Yosemite National Park Fire Rages On
The wildfire has so far claimed more than 193,000 acres – an area similar in size to New York City.
PropertyCasualty360.com excerpt, August 27, 2013 – “In an effort to control the blaze, 12 helicopters and half-dozen fixed wing tankers are dropping water and retardant from the air,” says Dr. Thomas Girnius, senior scientist at AIR Worldwide. “Additionally, 2,800 firefighters are fighting the blaze on the ground.”
In addition to air and ground support, an unmanned military drone has been called in to help battle the blaze by providing intelligence directly back to the incident commander. Flying over the burn, the drone’s cameras capture real-time footage of the blaze – allowing fire resources to make quick, calculated decisions about where to deploy.
