University of Colorado Baker Hall

Project Overview

Originally built in 1937 the university dormitory is the second oldest residence hall on the University of Colorado – Boulder Campus.  Pie was retained in 2011 to provide building enclosure consulting, modeling, and testing services for a $42M project slated to renovate the 75+ year old building.  While the original & common to campus exterior multi-wythe natural stone walls had to remain, it created a challenging situation to install new windows as well as create a new exterior wall system (built from the interior) that would provide the necessary air, thermal, and vapor control for long-term building performance.

Pie’s scope of services included detailed construction document review and consultation, design phase meetings, hygrothermal modeling to validate condensation control in the new walls, periodic on-site quality assurance observations and field performance testing of the new replacement windows and transitions to the existing historic stone.
