Since adding Electronic Leak Detection (ELD) testing to its service line in 2014, Pie Consulting & Engineering has performed this vital leakage testing service on nearly 2.4 million square feet of roofing and waterproofing membranes across the country.
“We have experienced a remarkable increase in demand for this service,” said Stuart Mitchell, Senior Project Manager with Pie’s Building Science Group. “ELD provides clients with extremely quick and accurate identification of breaches in horizontal and vertical membranes, even pinholes. When breaches are detected, they can generally be repaired and Pie can retest the areas to confirm their performance while still on site.”
Waterproofing membranes are a critical element in building enclosure systems but are ultimately covered with finishing materials. The failure of these membranes can be prohibitively expensive to repair. For this reason, many designers are specifying integrity testing to verify the waterproofing membrane is free of discontinuities and breaches before it is covered up by permanent materials.
While flood testing typically is the standard testing method for these membranes, it has limitations. Flood testing can only indicate where water is dripping out through the substrate below, but not the specific location of the breach at the waterproofing level above. It also cannot be performed on vertical surfaces or at locations where the underside of the slab is not accessible. As such, ELD has become a more popular alternative to traditional flood testing.
In 2016 alone, Pie has performed nearly 250 ELD tests covering a total of 1 million square feet of waterproofing. Pie has performed ELD in seven states and has worked with 57 general contractors and 24 waterproofing contractors.
Some of the marquis projects in 2016 on which Pie performed ELD testing include:
Walker Art Center – Minneapolis, MN
Moody Family (Park Cities) YMCA – Dallas, TX
Colorado State University Stadium – Fort Collins, CO
